JUMA by Alia Juma was founded in 2003 as a fashion brand and relaunched in 2020 as a sustainable design platform. The studio develops clothing, accessories, and soft furnishings in collaboration with artists, musicians, digital designers, interior designers, and other creative partners. Wherever possible, products are made using fabrics derived from recycled plastic water bottles.
Alia Juma studied at George Brown College and began her career working as an assistant designer at several design houses. Jamil Juma holds a degree in Biosystems Engineering from McGill University and worked as an investment strategist before entering the fashion industry.
The designers have lived and worked internationally, including in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, China, and Kazakhstan, as well as across North America in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. These experiences continue to inform the studio’s global perspective on design and materials.
In addition to its collections, JUMA develops customized creative products for retail, hospitality, and other industries. Clients have included MAC Cosmetics, Four Seasons Hotels, W Hotels, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Roots Canada, and NIO Electric Cars (China).
JUMA has presented collections at New York Fashion Week, Toronto Fashion Week, Shanghai Fashion Week, and Singapore Fashion Week. The brand’s work has been featured in publications including Elle US, Vogue Italy, Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, InStyle, Paper Magazine, and Business of Fashion. JUMA designs have been worn by artists and public figures such as Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Coco Rocha, Solange Knowles, and Rachel McAdams.
More recently, the designers were invited to speak at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Beijing and the International Economic Forum of the Americas in Toronto.
